What is D.E.A.R.?
D.E.A.R. stands for “Drop Everything and Read,” a national month-long celebration which usually takes place in April. It is designed to remind folks of all ages to make reading a priority activity in their lives.
Can D.E.A.R. be celebrated anytime?
Yes, of course! We encourage you to “Drop Everything and Read” every day throughout the year. Imani believes that literacy is the foundation for all learning. In order to promote " a love for reading", Imani has chosen to implement a school-wide initiative to read each school day for 25 minutes. In addition, we have issued a challenge to the parents of our elementary students to have them read 25 minutes a day for five days during the week. Students who present their verified paperwork for the week are rewarded with a prize.
According to a study by the American Educational Research Association, a student who can't read on grade level by 3rd grade
is four times less likely to graduate by age 19 than a child who reads proficiently by that time.
